Huruli Kaalu Chutney Powder | Grandmother Style Horse Gram Chutney Powder


  • 1/2 cup horse gram | hurili kaalu

  • 1 tsp oil

  • 1/2 tbsp cumin seeds

  • 5 red chillies, dried

  • 1/4 cup curry leaves, dried

  • 1/2 cup dry coconut powder

  • Salt to taste

  • A small marble sized tamarind

  • Water or yoghurt


  1. Heat a pan, add horse gram and dry roast the horse gram on medium heat until aroma arises and starts spluttering.

  2. Stir continuously then remove from the heat and let it cool down.

  3. Heat oil in a pan, add in cumin seeds and roast.

  4. Then add red chillies, curry leaves, and dry coconut one by one.

  5. Roast on medium heat until dry coconut turns golden brown. Do not over roast it.

  6. Let the coconut mixture cool down completely.

  7. Then transfer the roasted ingredients into a mixie jar. Now add in the salt and tamarind.

  8. Grind until a fine powder and store in an airtight container for up to 2 months or store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

  9. Mix this chutney powder with water or yoghurt to make normal chutney and serve with Rotis, Dosa, Idli or Rice.
