Breakfast Recipe | Akki Tari Uppittu | Rice Rava Upma

Servings 4 - 6 


  • 2 cups rice rava/akki tari 

  • 5 tbsp oil or as required  

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds 

  • 8 - 10 green chillies  

  • Curry leaves 

  • 1 tbsp grated ginger 

  • 2 red onions 

  • 5 cups of water 

  • Salt to taste 

  • 3 - 4 tbsp lemon juice  

  • Coriander  

  • Note: You can also use  urad dal, chana dal and fresh coconut  


  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil and add rice rava. 

  2. Roast the rice rave on medium-low heat until it's aromatic. 

  3. Make sure not to brown the rava. 

  4. Next, heat 4 tablespoons of oil,  add the mustard and let them splutter.  

  5. Now add the chopped chillies, curry leaves and ginger. 

  6. Stir and cook them in oil for a few minutes. 

  7. Add onion, stir and cook for 2 minutes. 

  8. Next, add water and salt, mix it well and boil the water. 

  9. Stir in the lemon juice and reduce the heat. 

  10. Add roasted rice rava and mix well.  

  11. Cover and cook on low heat for 8 - 10 minutes or until done. 

  12. Open the lid and mix well. 

  13. Garnish with coriander and serve warm.
