Homemade Ginger Beer

Ingredients for Ginger Bug:

Day 1:

  • 3 cups of filtered water

  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped ginger

  • 3 tablespoons sugar

Day 2:

  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped ginger

  • 3 tablespoons sugar

Day 3:

  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped ginger

  • 3 tablespoons sugar


  1. In a glass jar, add day 1 ingredients and stir.

  2. Cover the jar with a cheesecloth or kitchen towel & secure it with a rubber band. Place the jar in the warmest place in your house. Feed every 24 hours, day 2 & day 3 ingredients (Don't stir).

Ingredients for Ginger Beer/Syrup:

Day 4 :

  • 10 cups of filtered water

  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup sugar (add more if you want)

  • 1/4 cup grated ginger Ginger bug to taste


  1. In a large pot add day 4 ingredients and, stir.

  2. Boil the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Then turn off the heat and allow the mixture to steep for an hour.

  3. Meanwhile, open the ginger bug jar and strain the ginger bug. Keep that aside. (After 3 days of feeding you should see small bubbles floating in the jar).

  4. Now strain the ginger syrup, add in the ginger bug and stir.

  5. Pour the mixture into the glass bottles and seal the bottles tightly.

  6. Open the bottle every day to release the excess gas for 2-3 days.

  7. Once the beer is ready and fizzy store that in the refrigerator to prevent further fermentation.

  8. Consume within 1-2 weeks. Note: The more you feed it, the more real strong ginger taste you will get.

  9. You can also add 3 tbsp lime juice and sliced jalapeño in the ginger bug.
