Oliebollen | Traditional Dutch Doughnuts | Dutch Street Food


  • 150 ml warm milk

  • 3 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp dry yeast

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp orange zest (lemon zest or 1 apple cubes or 1 cup pineapple cubes)

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 tsp of salt

  • Oil for deep frying

  • Icing sugar


  1. Add milk, sugar, and yeast to a large bowl and mix well.  

  2. Let it sit for a minute or two.  

  3. Then add egg, orange zest, salt, and all-purpose flour.  

  4. Mix for 10 minutes or until gluten develops.  

  5. Cover and let the dough rise for about an hour.  

  6. Then gently fold the dough.  

  7. Heat the oil in a pan and drop 1 tbsp of dough.  

  8. Fry oliebollen until brown or until it's done.  

  9. Remove oliebollen onto kitchen paper.  

  10. Sprinkle some icing sugar and serve hot.
